The Punjab Government in 2020 revealed its plan to set up an industrial park at Mattewara. After change of government in 2022, the new government renamed it as “Kum-Kalan Textile park”. In this plan industry was to be setup on 1000 acres of land in the flood plains of Satluj river near Mattewara forest. Public Action Committee, a Ludhiana based civil society group, opposed this plan. In 11 July meeting the government announced to withdraw its’ plan to setup textile/industrial park in this area. Earlier, on 1 July 2022, Public Action Committee had held a press conference at Chandigarh Press Club in which it showed a presentation explaining that why textile or industrial park near mattewara forest would be an open invitation for ecological disaster.
