Paddy is a high water intensive crop which is largely responsible for sharp fall in ground water table in Punjab. The government’s policy of assured procurement of paddy on minimum support price has trapped farmers as there is not such procurement policy for alternative crops. Dr. Daler Singh has invented new techniques of paddy farming that are less water intensive. A team of Agriculture and Environment Center met Dr. Daler Singh during Jal Chetna Yatra (Water Awareness Campaign) to learn about his techniques.
